Project Spotlight: The Historic Coliseum Building

Histroic Coliseum on Lake Street in Minneapolis.

The historic Coliseum project on Lake Street in Minneapolis was a transformative renovation aimed at fostering generational wealth and opportunity for BIPOC small business owners. The 85,000-square-foot historic building, which sustained significant damage during the upheaval following the social unrest in 2020, was revitalized to provide 25 affordable rental spaces for minority-owned businesses. With the expertise of architect and co-owner Alicia Belton and the assistance of New History consultants, led by Managing Director Quentin Collette, general contracting by Watson-Forsberg in partnership with Tri-Construction, along with countless others, the historic building now includes a restaurant affiliated with Du Nord, the reopening of Mama Safia’s Somali-themed restaurant, a hair salon, a barber shop, and an event center. This redevelopment continues the building’s legacy of community support and hopes to continue to leave a lasting impact on the Lake Street corridor. Join us to hear from the project team how they brought all the pieces together.
